Per Diem Substitute Teacher

Summary/Objective:
In the absence of the teacher or teaching assistant, Substitute Teachers work with regular classroom staff in a supportive role, carrying out developmentally appropriate activities to promote the health, safety and education of children under the age of 5 years. Per Diem Substitute Teachers work on an as-needed basis and may be assigned full day (7.5 hours/day) or part-day, based on need on any given day.

Essential Functions
1. Supervises and monitors children at all times.
2. As needed or requested, assists in the planning, preparation, and implementation of individual and group activities.
3. Assists in setting up and maintaining a clean, safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate environment in the classroom.
4. Assists in the implementing program policies and procedures including reporting observations of children.
5. Interacts with children in a warm and caring manner.
6. Communicates with parents in a professional manner as needed or asked by regular staff.
7. Assists in communicating with families about children’s daily experiences in the program including care routines, interests, and skills.
8. Cooperates and performs as a part of a team.
9. Recognize and report suspected physical and sexual abuse to the appropriate authorities as required by law.
10. Maintains confidentiality at all times.
11. Other duties as assigned.

Competencies
1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written & verbal)
2. Knowledge of Early Childhood Development and developmentally appropriate curriculum
practice
3. Proficient computer skills
4. Bilingual skills: English/Spanish, English/Cape Verdean or Haitian Creole a plus
5. Takes responsibility for delivery of services as part of team effort in unit/department.
6. Takes initiative in making suggestions for improvement of services.
7. Meets deadlines without causing undue disruption.
8. Utilizes human resources, time, and supplies efficiently.

Physical Demands
Duties may require standing and walking, or sitting for long periods of time.
Requires lifting 40 lbs., with frequent carrying of up to 25 lbs.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Monday through Friday, as scheduled between 8:15am to 3:45 pm.

Required Education and Experience
1. CDA, Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred
2. Minimum of three years of experience working with children under the age of five preferred
3. Desired - Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Psychology or related field
