Per Diem Teacher

Per-Diem Substitute Teacher

Summary/Objective:
In the absence of the teacher or teaching assistant, Substitute Teachers work with regular classroom staff in a supportive role, providing safe and nurturing learning environments, routines, and interactions that promote positive outcomes for children and families. They carry out developmentally appropriate activities to promote the health, safety, and education of children under the age of 5 years. Per Diem Substitute Teachers work on an as-needed basis and may be assigned full day (7.5 hours/day) or part-day, based on need on any given day.

Essential Functions

  1. Supervises and monitors children at all times in accordance with all Federal, State, and local standards and requirements.
  2. Assists in setting up and maintaining a clean, safe, healthy, welcoming, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment.
  3. As needed or requested, assists in the planning, preparation, and implementation of developmentally appropriate individual and group curriculum activities. Individualizes as needed, including for children with diverse learning needs and those for whom Englich is a second language.
  4. Interacts and engages with all children in a warm and caring manner
  5. In compliance with all State licensing regulations and program policies, practices positive discipline techniques with children to promote positive behavior and prevent or reduce the likelihood of challenging behavior.
  6. Communicates with parents in a respectful and professional manner as needed or asked by regular staff.
  7. Adheres to and assists in implementing program policies and procedures including reporting observations of children.
  8. Assists in communicating with families about children’s daily experiences in the program including care routines, interests, and skills.
  9. Cooperates and performs as a part of a team.
  10. Maintains the highest degree of professionalism at all times, including, but not limited to: adherence to dress code, to NAEYC Code of Ethics, to Child & Family code of conduct, and to consistency of care through maintaining assigned schedule.
  11. As a mandated reported, recognizes and reports suspected physical and sexual abuse to the appropriate authorities as required by law.
  12. Maintains confidentiality at all times.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Competencies

  1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written & verbal)
  2. Knowledge of Early Childhood Development and developmentally appropriate curriculum practice
  3. Proficient computer skills
  4. Bilingual skills: English/Spanish, English/Cape Verdean or Haitian Creole a plus
  5. Takes responsibility for delivery of services as part of team effort in unit/department.
  6. Takes initiative in making suggestions for improvement of services.
  7. Meets deadlines without causing undue disruption.
  8. Utilizes human resources, time, and supplies efficiently.

Work Environment

This position is primarily classroom-based which involves both indoor and outdoor environments. This position may be assigned primarily to one classroom location or may be assigned to act as a resource to more than one classroom.

Physical Demands

Duties may require standing and walking, or sitting for long periods of time.

Requires lifting 40 lbs., with frequent carrying of up to 25 lbs

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Monday through Friday, as scheduled between 7:30 am to 5:30pm.

Required Education and Experience

  1. High School diploma or equivalency required. CDA, Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred.
  2. MA Department of Early Education and Care Teacher Certificate preferred
  3. Minimum of one year of experience working with children under the age of five preferred
  4. A minimum of one year of experience working with ethnically, linguistically, and/or economically diverse children and families preferred.
  5. Bilingual skills: English/Spanish, English/Cape Verdean or Haitian Creole a plus.
